BMW Says Goodbye To Electric Cars With The Aim To Introduce Hydrogen Engines.

With the recent report from Information Trends, Hydrogen Cars are about to become a big deal and the future of automobile transportation. In as much as Electric Vehicles (EVs) has been brought to the spotlight due to its advantage on zero emission, hydrogen cars have been put down to the shadows but it seems like they might overthrow the market come 2025.

Both Hydrogen Vehicles and EVs aim at reducing Carbon Emission from the environment but hydrogen vehicles introduces this new feature called hydrogen fuel cells which only releases water vapor, it increases their edge to an eco-friendly environment.

To date, around 2.5 million EVs have been sold in the United States. Meanwhile, as of mid-2022, roughly about 15,000 hydrogen cars were on U.S. roadways, and all of them are located in California.

In the coming phase of transportation, mobility will be based off performance, eco-friendly features and rapid refueling times. With all these trends, Hydrogen Engines are emerging as a possible potential game-changer. There is only a hand full of manufacturers working on them and BMW is one of them. BMW CEO, Oliver Zipse announced that hydrogen engines will play an important and significant role in the long run in many parts of the world.

The gist here is the Hydrogen Fuel-cell Vehicle (HFCV). It operates with a motor similar to the battery electric-vehicles but uses a stack of fuel cells instead of a heavy battery. The fuel cells combine with hydrogen (H2) with oxygen (O2) from the air to produce water vapor and generate electricity. In simpler terms, fuel-celled vehicles are a type of hybrid called Fuel-cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FCHEV).

With Hydrogen being the most abundant element in the universe, it’s not exactly found in its pure form and is often combined with other elements therefore creating pure hydrogen for vehicles requires a great deal of energy to break the compound which is derived from fossil fuels like natural gas.

With Hydrogen Fuel-cell vehicles having similarities to EVs, there is a unique difference which is that Hydrogen fueled vehicles can be refueled quickly and maintain a consistent driving even with a change in the temperature.

Hydrogen is the key game changer to reshaping this future.

With the number of electric cars that has rapidly reason in the past three years, the International Energy Agency predicts that only 14% of cars will be electric and by the end of 2023, another 4% will be added. This is a great opportunity for hydrogen cars to get a portion of the automobile market, which is still dominated by high-emissions vehicles. Hydrogen engine manufacturers should keep in mind that no single solution will meet every customer’s mobility need globally, therefore several alternative driving systems could coexist in the future.
